Construction Materials Engineering Laboratory

Concrete and reinforced concrete are the main materials and structural members that constitute the modern social infrastructure. Conventionally, it was believed that reinforced concrete structures with excellent durability could be used “semi-permanently” without maintenance. However, several research and survey results of existing structures have clarified that even concrete structures deteriorate over time. In addition, depending on the construction and environmental conditions, they may deteriorate in a shorter period of time without being able to withstand long-term use. In our laboratory, in addition to elucidating the concrete deterioration mechanism, we are developing a method for quantitatively evaluating the mechanical performance of structures that have sustained material deterioration, including a method for repairing and reinforcing these structures.

Main experimental equipment

Repeated impact surface damage equipment

Surface damage can be studied by repeatedly applying various levels of impact force to concrete.

Concrete scraping experimental equipment

A device for examining the damage caused by the abrasion of the concrete surface

Main research themes

Damage to the concrete surface owing to repeated impacts

We are currently working on the elucidation of the scraping phenomenon of the concrete surface by the repeated action of small impact force (assuming the collision of gravel contained in a water stream) that does not lead to the destruction of concrete. In addition, we are also working on its protective measures.

Corrosion of reinforcing bar and durability of reinforced concrete

This is a study on the inspection methods of reinforced concrete deterioration, deterioration countermeasures, and repair methods.

Strain behavior of spiral ropes

This study elucidates the strain behavior of spiral ropes and aims to extend the life of structures by adopting them.
