Structural Mechanics Laboratory

The Structural Mechanics Laboratory provides education (regular courses) in the field of civil engineering that are mainly related to the analysis of framed construction such as bridges.
In collaboration with the research teams of the Structural Engineering Laboratory of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, we perform research on engineering problems related to erosion control and optimal design of structures, as well as engineering applications such as reliability engineering.

Overview

This laboratory started as the “Vibration and Destruction” Laboratory, a course of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, which was established in 1964 by Professor Takaichi Shingo. The Vibration and Destruction Laboratory was subsequently headed by Professor Hokkai Okamoto, and later by Professor Katsuki. During management the period of Professor Nobutaka Ishikawa, the laboratory was integrated with the first structural course (established by Professor Fukuhei Takebeya, and succeeded by Professor Ryohei Takebeya), which was the main course until then. Furthermore, because Professor Ishikawa was also a student of Professor Fukuhei Takebeya, the first structural course was also handed over to him.
In his time, Professor Ishikawa produced more than 30 degree holders, and Professor Katsuki is more than 10 degree holders, the current person in-charge, is one of them.
Our main research fields are structural engineering, optimal design, reliability engineering, impact engineering, and erosion control engineering. Regarding the field of education, we offer courses related to the research fields centered on structural mechanics.Recently, Associate Professor Horiguchi has taken over the Structural Mechanics Laboratory and maintained the current structure. The main research topics are load evaluation and trapping effects in erosion control. The main analytical methods are FEM and DEM.
