The Cross-Domain 1 Research Division, like the research divisions established within the Global Security Center (GS), is responsible for planning and supporting research activities conducted by faculty members of the National Defense Academy. However, it plays a particularly important role in the organic integration of research activities in the space, electromagnetic wave, and unmanned aerial vehicle domains, as well as in research activities that form the foundation of Japan's defense guidelines.
Based on the National Defense Program Guidelines and the Mid-Term Defense Program set forth by the Minister of Defense, the Cross-Domain 1 and 2 Research Divisions have adopted the following activity policy:
"Research activities that organically integrate the space, cyber, and electromagnetic wave domains, which are key to multi-dimensional integrated defense capabilities, and enable continuous surveillance."
In other words, to develop technologies that enable flexible and strategic activities at all stages, from peacetime to wartime, we integrate fundamental research and pursue activities with more flexible and creative thinking that goes beyond existing technological frameworks and conventional approaches, in order to respond to increasingly diverse and complex situations. We plan to establish a group of research themes within the department that contribute to this policy, and to build close information exchange with the Cross-Domain 2nd Research Division and collaborative systems with various institutions in order to produce more meaningful research results.
